Applications for the Belgian government ARES scholarships are now open for the 2022-2023 academic year. The ARES program offers you the possibility of having a scholarship that fully covers your bachelor’s or master’s studies or a further training course in Belgium.
ARES is the federation of higher education establishments of the Wallonia Federation- Brussels in Belgium. It brings together more than 120 public higher education establishments .
Applicants should not seek prior admission to one of the French-speaking universities in Belgium in order to be able to apply for the scholarships. If you are accepted, you will be registered in one of the establishments federated by ARES.
NOTICE : Some websites claim that the program is open to all developing countries. This is not true. The program is open only to members of the ARES (18 developing countries). You can find the list below.
Applying for an ARES scholarship is completely free. ARES does not charge any fees at any stage of the application or selection process whatsoever.

Number of scholarships
ARES grants an average of 130 scholarships for baccalaureate and masters and 70 scholarships for training to nationals of its partner countries.
Countries eligible for ARES scholarships
Applicants do not need to obtain prior admission to one of the French-speaking universities in Belgium to be able to apply for the scholarships. You are eligible if you are a national of one of the following countries: Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Ecuador, Haiti, Madagascar, Morocco, Niger, Peru, Philippines, Democratic Republic Congo, Rwanda, Senegal , Vietnam.
ARES ensures that, for all international courses and internships organized, candidates from sub-Saharan Africa represent 50% of all staff.
Amount of ARES scholarships in Belgium
For Bachelor or Master studies:
- International travel expenses: maximum one round trip per academic year.
- Monthly allowance: €1,150 / month for a period of 12 months.
- Indirect mission expenses: €150, granted once per stay.
- Installation, teaching, and return costs: €700, granted once per stay.
- Registration fees.
- Insurance.
- Travel costs within the framework of interuniversity training: Reimbursed based on actual costs and on.
For training scholarship :
- International travel expenses : A round trip.
- Living allowance :
- 83 € / day for stays of 8 to 17 days.
- € 1,400 / month for stays of 18 days to 1 month (fixed amount).
- € 1,400 / month for stays of 1 to 6 months, proportionally the number of days.
- Mission expenses : 150 €. Amount awarded once per stay, upon arrival of the fellow.
- Insurance : Directly paid by ARES.
- Travel costs in the context of inter-university training : Reimbursed based on actual costs and on supporting documents.
Eligibility criteria
To be admissible for the Belgian government scholarship program ARES , you must:
- Reside and / or work in your country of origin when the application is submitted,
- Be a national of one of the countries mentioned above,
- Be under 40 years old for bachelor and master, and under 45 years old for training,
- Evidence of a relevant professional occupation in a developing country of at least two years,
- Have good knowledge of written and spoken French.
How to apply for ARES scholarships in Belgium ?
The application procedure is done online via the GIRAF platform. You must first :
1- Create an account on the GIRAF platform : This account will then be validated (within a few hours to a few days) by ARES and you will receive a confirmation email to create a password and log in. If you created an account last year, and it was activated by ARES, you can reuse this account and reset your password if necessary.
2- Once your account has been validated: Access the application form via the Competitive calls tab of your GIRAF profile.
You can complete your form in several times. From the moment you click on “Submit my application”, your application is sent to ARES and you can no longer modify it.
Deadline
Applications must be submitted via GIRAF by January 28, 2022 at 12 noon at the latest.
